Summary of Accountabilities

The Avionics Engineer is responsible for the design, development, testing, and implementation of avionics and electrical engineering projects. This is an experienced-level position with a supervisory role.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works under only general direction. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives.
  • Communicates with organizational management regarding scheduling, risk, and cost factor relating to engineering issues.
  • Communicates organizational needs, oversees employee’s performance, provides guidance, support, and identifies development needs for the engineering department.
  • Design/generate schematics, wiring diagrams, harness assembly, and electrical reports with goal of performing on time and under budget.
  • Liaison with avionics technicians to resolve installation issues and support systems checkout.
  • Stays informed of new technologies, trends, and regulations in avionics and electrical engineering.
  • Develop and implement new processes and design practices to improve quality, cycle time, and efficiency.
  • Works to the criteria of design proposals, Customer Specifications and requirements.
  • Researches design proposals, specifications, and requirements. Analyzes data and applies to product designs.
  • Supports team members and helps ensure that established goals and deadlines are met.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to Avionics Engineers.
  • Frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts. Represents the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects.
  • Keeps Project Manager informed of status and significant problems.
  • Supports the quality management system and quality objectives.
  • Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective communication, coordination, and working relationships with organization staff and management.
  • Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective communication, coordination, and working relationships with customers, suppliers, and outside contacts.
  • Progresses in job knowledge and skill required to bring added value to the organization.
  • Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.
  • Support avionics in software loading testing, and troubleshooting of installed avionics and electrical systems for conformity

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent years of experience
  • Possesses 4+ years of experience as an Avionics Engineer, preferably with direct experience in avionics systems certification.
  • Experience in CAD, AutoCAD, or its equivalent

Additional Requirements or Skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiar with avionics system approval and certification (i.e. major/minor, 337, Supplemental Type Certificate (STC)).
  • Avionics/Electrical Troubleshooting.
  • Familiar with and/or prepared substantiation reports including EMI/RFI, Ground/Flight Test Plans, Ground/Flight Test Reports, Functional Hazard Analysis, Electrical Load Analysis, and System Safety Assessments.
  • Proficient at producing high quality designs to schedule and budget.
  • Demonstrate proficient knowledge of regulatory requirements needed to certify aircraft designs.

Job Competencies:

  • Superior understanding of Company operations and needs.
  • General understanding of mechanical engineering and assembly principles.
  • General understanding of FAA requirements.
  • Able to prioritize projects and multitask.
  • Adept at computer applications (Microsoft Office and engineering software).
  • Proficient in AutoCAD.
  • Good communications skills.
  • Possess an advanced understanding of engineering concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand Standard English, including technical, engineering related vocabulary, for work correspondence and work products.
  • Must be able to adhere to all established safety policies, processes and procedures.
